PATHFOOD works with farmers to validate selenium biofortification methods in real field conditions, supporting sustainable functional food production across Europe.
Rather than simply handing farmers a finished manual, the PATHFOOD consortium believes in a co-creation approach. Our participatory trials invite agricultural practitioners to apply our cutting-edge Se-fertilisation and cultivation strategies directly in their commercial fields. Throughout the growing season, farmers work closely with PATHFOOD researchers to monitor crop health, yield, and selenium uptake.
The success of functional foods depends on sustainable primary production. By actively involving farmers in the testing phase, we gather invaluable, structured feedback on:
• Practical Feasibility: How easily do the biofortification protocols integrate into routine farm management?
• Economic Viability: Are the costs and resource requirements manageable for the producers?
• Environmental Impact: How do these methods perform under varying real-world climate and soil conditions?
This real-time feedback loop ensures that the final guidelines produced by PATHFOOD are not only scientifically robust but also highly practical, cost-effective, and ready for market uptake. It represents a true multi-actor approach, where the agricultural community directly shapes the future of European functional foods.
